Why Following Your Passion is Important
As the days shorten and September begins, many of us naturally find ourselves reflecting on our next chapter in life.
Maybe you have children who are returning to school after a long summer holiday at home, and you’re feeling lost? Or maybe you’re feeling relief that you will have some space back to yourself.
Perhaps September means an older child leaving home for the first time to go to college or university? Or perhaps there are no children involved but you are feeling that the change in the seasons could open up a different direction for you?
As summer turns to autumn we can often be left reflecting what direction we want our own lives to take as we head towards the end of another year. I find one of the most powerful guiding lights at this time is “my passion”.
Following your passion doesn’t necessarily mean quitting everything and starting afresh. It can be as simple as making space each day for what brings you joy, meaning and energy. When we honour our passions, whether that’s creativity, caring for others, learning, building, or exploring, we reconnect with a part of ourselves that is deeply authentic. This connection fuels motivation, builds resilience, and often leads to a greater sense of fulfilment in daily life.
Research shows that people who engage regularly with what they love often experience:
Lower stress levels
Improved wellbeing
Stronger relationships.
Passion acts as an anchor when life feels uncertain and as a compass when we’re unsure of which way to turn.
As September unfolds, perhaps it’s worth asking yourself: What do I feel most drawn to right now? What excites me, even in small ways? How can I weave a little more of that into the coming weeks?
Whether you’re thinking about the next month, the next quarter, or even the rest of your life, giving your passion some room to breathe could be the start of something truly transformative.
Maybe this season is your opportunity to realign, refocus, and step closer to what makes your heart feel alive.
